Final Face-off – Djokovic reigns Supreme

The 2019 Wimbledon championships were the 133rd to be held at the All England club and certainly lived up to its reputation.

Novak Djokovic won the Grand Slam beating Roger Federer in a five-set thriller in front of a packed centre court crowd.

The two players, who now have 36 grand slam titles between them, met before in the 2014 and 2015 Wimbledon finals.

However, it was nearly five hours until a winner was decided in this finale.

Djokovic took the opening set through a tiebreak, before Federer replied with a 6-1 win in the second.

The world number one went in front again but Federer didn’t make it an easy job forcing the Serbian to another tiebreak.

However, the Swiss bounced back again, taking the fourth set 6-4. This therefore, forced the match to a fifth set.

The third tiebreak of the match was seen in the fifth set as nothing could separate the pair, but Djokovic prevailed, and the Serbian was crowned Wimbledon champion for the fifth time.

In the Ladies’ tournament, it was a more one-sided final, but not in the way that it would necessarily be expected.

Simona Halep won her first Wimbledon championship – an achievement in itself – but it was made all the more impressive as she beat 7-time Wimbledon winner Serena Williams in a 6-2 6-2 straight-set victory.

The 27-year-old was the first Romanian player to win a Wimbledon title and remains ranked number one in the world.

The runner-up, Serena Williams, was also in action in the mixed doubles with Andy Murray in a pairing which was a huge talking point for tennis fans.

Murray, who has struggled with injury since 2017, made his return to Wimbledon this year but only played in the mixed doubles.

However, the fan-favourite duo was knocked out in the Round of 16 by the team of Bruno Soares and Nicole Melichar.

The tournament also saw 15-year-old Coco Gauff make her mark on the world stage.

By the time she stepped onto the court, she was already in the history books, as the youngest player to qualify for the competition.

However, the American defied all odds in the first round beating Venus Williams in straight sets.

Gauff went onto reach the fourth round but was knocked out by in-form Simona Halep, who went on to win the Grand slam.

Wimbledon is never without its special moments and the best part is, we get it all over again next year.
