Cuts, Guts and all things Nuts – Simply Sfx

With Halloween quickly approaching (and a lack of preparation for many of us) a costume is needed ASAP. Sometimes throwing on some gore to a regular outfit, takes it from a 2 to a 10, and it is not as complicated as it seems. Everyone can do special effects with a few simple ingredients and some spare time.

  1. Get yourself some Vaseline, flour, face paint/eyeshadows, fake blood and either some liquid latex or eyelash glue (not necessary but will help with the longevity of your wounds
  2. Mix the Vaseline and the flour into a sort of dough, this acts as scar wax and it’s a lot more    accessible, cheaper and easy to work with.
  3. Layer this dough into whatever shape you wish, whether it be along your neck or across your forehead.

4. Remove part of or ‘slice’ this dough to simulate a real wound and to ensure longevity apply the liquid latex or eyelash glue on top and let dry.

5. Start to add irritation and bruising, by using a combination of red, pink, purple and green to the outer edges. Apply the colour with different methods and play about with texture. The messier it looks, the better, as no natural wound is perfectly presented.

6. Add black in the deepest part of the wound for depth and dimension, as black is ideal for creating a shadow.

7. Lastly, apply loads of fake blood, it really does act as the icing on the cake.
