Top Tips for Surviving the Summer at Home

Summer baby, the best time of year!

There’s no classes, no nagging lecturers and for those of us who are lucky enough, no early mornings.

We can chill, get wreckt and not worry about our next essay.  We can scrounge off our parents, avoid the uni drama and what’s that?  Do I hear Ibiza calling?

There’s only one flaw to the dream though; our friends are scattered all over the country! We all want to be back in Glasgow, but the reality is a small country village, with nothing but sheep and grass, and grass and sheep.

The EDIT have some top tips to help you beat the summer blues when stuck at home.

Pick up a new hobby

This may sound cheesy but the best way to avoid getting too down in the dumps is to focus your mind on something else.

Buy a reasonably priced camera off Amazon and try out photography. Stroll around your hometown for some interesting snaps. Adobe Lightroom or even apps like Canva then make editing really fun and easy. Your Instagram could be fire in no time!

Other ideas include starting a blog for reviewing movies, learning a new instrument or even cooking exciting recipes.

Reconnect with old friends

OK, so you might’ve sworn never to talk to that weirdo Jessica* ever again but what is she up to now? Aren’t you slightly curious from what you’ve seen on your Facebook feed?

Summer is the best time to reconnect with people who you got along with in high school but may have lost touch with since.

All it takes is a simple Starbucks date to fill each other in on the dirty details from everyone you knew in sixth year, the ultimate gossip chain.

Pester your uni friends to visit

“Come on guys, it’s not that bad! We can… go for a walk on the beach and… um.”

The town nightclub may be sh*te, the cinema may have one screen premiering films from the 60s and the town attraction may only be the Tesco superstore but go oan and paint the town grey!

Show your city pals the delights of the countryside by camping, going on cool walks and visiting local landmarks, their visit will be one to remember.

Travel

During summer home is a break from uni but even sometimes we need a break from home. Really struggling all by your lonesome? Check online for the cheapest deals, grab a mate and get a fresh perspective.

Besides, with hours and hours of travelling between us all; hundreds of miles tearing us apart; land and sea separating the inseparable you can really miss adventures your pals. How on earth are we supposed to cope? Easy. More travelling!

Get a job

No, I’m not trying to sound like your mother. But lets be honest, we’re all really poor with no SAAS. Like, really really poor. A new job means money, new friends and feeling productive.

It can be tiresome and tedious at times but imagine going back to uni with your alcohol budget (aka your entire bank account) stocked with lots of cash. That’s what I call ideal.

Summer is a great time, but it’s a tough to get through without our best pals by our side every day of the week. We hope your summer is still a blast. Any ideas we’ve missed? Let us know!
