The newest successor to Andy Murray?

Andy Murray, one of the greatest young tennis players of our time, is still even now full of surprises. If we have learned anything about him in recent times, returning to the sport after battling a sever hip injury, it is that it is never a good thing to write him off. His brother, Jamie Murray, appeared in the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open and, after playing a good game, is set to be around for a little while longer.

However, the day will soon come where it is time for the dynamic duo – who are both now in their thirties – to retire and hang up their racquets. This means the search will soon start to find the next great Scottish tennis player to succeed them.

Talk is that young 19-year-old Aidan McHugh from Bearsden could be the one to carry the baton. Due to McHugh still being in the building blocks of his career, he is not yet confident enough to consider himself “the next Andy Murray”.

Currently number 569 in the global rankings, it is hoped that McHugh’s development in recent years will soon help him reach the height of the sport.

He is currently good friends with the two Murray’s, close enough to take to Twitter with a picture of him and Andy Murray calling him a “King Roaster”.

Speaking to Glasgow Times, McHugh said: “I’m committed to giving tennis a real shot to see where it takes me. Different players kick on at different points in their careers so I need to keep plugging away and hope that leap forward comes to me too at some point.”
