COVID-19- The Impact on SPFL

It has come to no surprise that the whole of the UK is on its way to total lockdown, after the surge of COVID-19 cases that have come to light over the weekend.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases has doubled in 24 hours, reaching 1,140 today, and 35 confirmed deaths of the virus.

These statistics are worrying and have brought a lot of public events to a standstill as many isolate themselves to keep safe.

On Friday, the Scottish Football Association announced that the “the decision of the Scottish FA Board to suspend ALL domestic professional and grassroots football under the jurisdiction of the Scottish FA until further notice.”

This means that, as it stands, there will be no matches played until the board decide to void the season or award the league to Celtic and relegate Heart of Midlothian.

This decision has been received negatively by a large group of fans, with many calling for the season to be voided. This is due to the 30+ game rule not being able to stand as there are still two teams on 29 games; Rangers and St Johnstone.

It will ultimately be down to the decision of the SFA, who will take head from those down in England facing the same issues.

Liverpool and Celtic both lead their respective tables, with Liverpool’s closest contenders 25 points behind and Celtic’s a marginally closer 13 points behind.

It is clear what fans of these two teams think; award the league title to the league leaders.

But, sporting integrity has to come into play when the league is concerned and I’m sure the SFA will exercise all options before coming to a final decision.
