Extreme Measures (to Save Money as a Student)

This week I have been thinking about how much money I have saved by winning prizes instead of buying them. It got me thinking about other ways that we students can save money.

Here I have listed my top 3:

1. Womble

You might have seen wombling advertised in Money Saving Expert this week, and maybe wondered how easy it is to make money from other people’s litter. Well, don’t fret because I tried it out for you and it turns out it’s pretty easy!

I started at Asda on Saturday morning (probably not the most sociable time for students?). After getting over the weird looks from people wondering why I was wandering around the car park picking up random bits of paper, I found five receipts. All you have to do is make sure the receipt has eight different items on it including one comparable item. I put each barcode number in the Asda Price Guarantee online and before you know it I had an Asda voucher worth £7, making that £11 mascara I had my eye on only £4! Here you can give it a go yourself.

2. Sell Your Stuff

It’s that time of year for a spring clean and all that so why not make some money off it too?

After reading the Marie Kondo book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying, I decided to clear out all my things and I mean everything. I boxed up my old DVDs and shipped them off to Music Magpie and Ziffit, making me a tidy sum of £90. That will go nicely  towards my new spring wardrobe. It just shows you that what is one person’s rubbish is another’s treasure.

3. Free Holiday

Now, there is two ways you can go about getting a free holiday – either by winning one, which is harder to do with the amount of people entering to win or by going WWOFing. This is where you go and live with a host family on a farm from as little as a weekend to as long as a couple of months.

With WWOFing all you need to pay for is your flights and you will usually get your accommodation and food free, your payment for helping out on the farm. This is a great experience and it could be even cheaper as you can also go WWOFing in your own country meaning you wouldn’t need to travel very far to access this great opportunity. You can check out WWOFing here.

Have you ever went to extreme lengths to save money? Let me know in the comments.
