La Fontaines come to GCU

Glasgow Caledonian University welcomed two Scottish music favourites to its campus slap bang in the middle of Fresher’s Week this Wednesday, 18 September.

Hosted by GCU’s very own Eilidh Fulton, indie rock band Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5 joined rap-rock outfit The LaFontaines in what was a colourful and exciting start to the academic year with GCU’S Big Gig event outside the CEE Building and The Arc Gym with a massive crowd for the stellar talent on offer.

The self-styled ensemble of “shiny disco ball hat wearing” members in Colonel Mustard & The Dijon 5, winners of Best Live Act at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards 2015, performed following the release of their 2018 EP Peace, Love & Mustard. The band are renowned for their exaggerated efforts on stage, with each wearing bright yellow clothes paired with helmets fashioned from disco balls. Jim Gellatly, radio presenter and DJ for XFM Scotland and Amazing Radio, describes them as “one of the most entertaining acts in Scotland right now”.

The LaFontaines were next up on the bill and headlining. Their self-assured style of rap-rock-slash-indie-slash-pop effortlessly got the crowd singing along. Hot on the heels of the release of their second album Common Problem, the boys from Motherwell have come a long way from their first gig at Glasgow’s famous King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut ten years ago. 2017 was a landmark year for the band as they found themselves performing at Download Festival, TRNSMT, and the Leeds & Reading Festivals. Their debut album, Class, reached number one on the Indie Breakers Chart its week of release, and made the top 10 in the Scottish chart. This year’s effort, Common Problem, has been released to wide critical acclaim as the band establish themselves as one of Scotland’s leading live acts.

Vice President for the School of Computing Engineering and Built Environment Eilidh Fulton said: “I really enjoyed the performance and I was so excited to have the opportunity to open for the La Fontaines.”
