Sustainable Fashion Matters

Sustainable fashion means taking into consideration the environmental and socio-economic aspect in the production, marketing and use of the products which includes clothes, shoes and accessories. But is it possible to be 100% sustainable in the fashion industry? There are various reasons why it may not be completely possible, for example, washing clothes consumes a lot of water, uses a lot of electricity and most of the detergents may not be eco-friendly. It might not be completely possible however a little step can make a huge difference. The step can be taken by companies who can be more considerate towards humanity and the environment. They should try and reduce the carbon footprint. As a consumer, we can buy products that are produced in an ethical way and re-use it multiple times before we discard it.

Here are a few tips to be more sustainable:

Educate yourself

It is important to gain some information on sustainable brands in the market. A little bit of research through the Internet will help you identify those brands which can make a big difference.

Vintage shopping

Producing new clothes leads to a bad carbon footprint, however, vintage clothing is very sustainable. Though vintage clothes are second hand they can be still worn as they are more often than not of good quality.

Donate your old clothes

Most of us have some clothes in our wardrobe which we never wear. It is a good place to start by donating old clothes for a good cause. Every time new clothes are bought some clothes should be donated and thereby you would be being more sustainable.

The 30 wears test

The 30 wears campaign was started by Livia Firth where she encouraged people to think before buying any clothes – if they would wear it a minimum of 30 times. She urged everyone to invest in products which have a longer life span and are more sustainable.

Quality over quantity

Better quality clothes do costs more, however, those are long-lasting. Cheaper clothes may not last long. It is all about changing your mindset and investing money in the right clothing.
