Love Actually – A Fashion Analysis

Love Actually (2003) is definitely my all-time favourite movie to watch around the festive period. It is a Christmas cocktail of a movie, with cinematic elements ranging from rom-com to comedy to tear-jerker – what’s not to love?

However, what has always made it stand out to me is its impeccable showcase of early millennial fashion. Here are some of my favourite outfits from this Christmas classic!

Juliet’s Winter Wedding Dress

Juliet and Peter have the winter wedding of dreams in the opening scene of Love Actually.

Juliet’s dress embodies the perfect balance of festive glam and feminine elegance – no wonder she has two men swooning over her throughout the movie!

Natalie’s School Nativity Outfit

Natalie is one of the most effortlessly stylish characters in the whole movie.

She makes a tacky, itchy Christmas jumper look glamorous (before they were even in style) This jumper paired with the amazing Santa red cord jacket is a dream come true.

Mia’s Girl-Boss Office Look

Regardless of what we think of Mia (and her home-wrecking ways) – it’s important to acknowledge how much sophistication her outfits provide.

Her office attire is totally empowering, the sharp black turtle neck and the pop of colour in the fitted skirt is extremely flattering. This whole outfit was ahead of its time.

Sarah’s Victory Dress

Sarah is definitely one of the most loveable souls in the movie, she is so selfless and her sense of self is very much disregarded as she becomes a full-time carer for her sick brother.

When she finally takes Karl home, we see her noughties style blossom for the first time as she celebrates this victory. The velvet and sequin combo dress, paired with the plan but embroidered coat is the perfect wholesome outfit to compliment her personality.

Karen’s Joni Mitchell Breakdown Look

Perhaps the saddest scene in the whole movie. Viewers have wept with Karen every year since 2003 as she realises her husband is in the middle of an affair.

Her outfit screams melancholy, yet hope, as the contrast between the red cardigan and blue dress bring a softness to this upsetting scene.

If you do one thing this Christmas, make sure you watch Love Actually – you will not be disappointed.
