‘Ane City’

Review Score – 4 stars

Category – Theatre

Ane City is a fantastic piece of one-person theatre set in Dundee, written and performed by Taylor Dyson.

The show’s key protagonist Tay, a Glasgow University Student, returns to her hometown of Dundee to a personally inauspicious welcome by navigating a night out with her mates and all the subsequent hilarity that such an occasion creates. Tay using delightfully intoned Dundonian gives a performance that utilises song, poetry and storytelling to elicit laughter and emotional moments of reflection throughout. The show revolves around themes of conflicting cultural identity, friendship and self-discovery.

Ane City has a fabulous pace to it with a performance that was an absolute joy to behold. This was my first theatre show I attended at the Edinburgh Fringe this year and it sets the bar high.

The use of Scot’s language throughout and the authentic and relative nature of the show makes this a must see in my opinion for any student that enjoys theatre. If you’ve never been to see a theatre show before, this is a perfect place to start!
